People in the region of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and other areas of Guatemala suffer from extreme poverty and often live on less that $1 a day. Family sizes are large, many women have no education and can’t even spell their names; work is hard to come by with an economic crash that occurred in the 1990s. This has led to extreme poverty and astronomical levels of infant and child malnutrition among these humble villagers, and no way out. Humble Hilo is trying to change that.
The projects we support are not only focused on taking care of the immediate needs of the people by providing malnourished children with food supplements, but also reaches deeper in trying to get at the root of the problem. Humble Hilo not only brings some of the beautiful handmade textiles of Guatemala to you, but we are also creating opportunities. By buying our products, you are not only supporting families in need of employment, but a portion of every item you buy will directly benefit those in great need by supporting projects in child nutrition, education and literacy for women, and microfinance loans for women to start their own small business to help break the cycle of poverty. The effects of what you are doing are endless….
