Kumale Ceramics

Intricate Craftmanship, Utmost Simplicity

Our pottery partner in the Kathmandu region specializes in traditional stoneware. Our vases are crafted from locally sourced, non-porous red clay using time-honored methods that make it more sturdy, compact, and durable than traditional earthenware. The legacy carries on with a blend of traditional craftsmanship, non-toxic materials and modern techniques. The result is stoneware that is durable, dishwasher- and microwave-safe, and chip-resistant, competing with mass-produced kitchenware while preserving intricate craftsmanship.

Our partner is located in one of Nepal's oldest pottery villages, about 11 kilometers from Kathmandu. These potters have maintained a cooperative, community-focused tradition for centuries. One is struck by how well the village has preserved its ancient pottery traditions. Brick-paved alleys wind through courtyards where villagers still shape, dry, and fire pottery using traditional methods.

For centuries, potters here have made traditional wares as family units, with many still following the same methods using clay dug up from farmers’ paddies. They have learned to embrace modern designs, yet strongly believe in preserving tradition and their cultural heritage, as they feel that the unique quality and aesthetics of hand-crafted ceramics cannot be matched by machine-made goods. The delicate lines and soft feel of hand-pulled pottery offer a subtle delight that mass-produced wares lack.

Enjoy brining this quality and tradition into your home.
