The Story behind the craft

Humble Hilo Kumale Ceramics is crafted from locally sourced, non-porous red clay and using time-honored methods. Kumale Ceramics preserves craftsman legacy with a blend of modern techniques. The result is stoneware that is beautiful and competes with the attributes of mass-produced kitchenware

Kumale is made in a historic pottery center outside Kathmandu, one of Nepal's oldest pottery villages. For centuries, the potters have made traditional wares as family units, with many still following the same methods using clay dug up from farmers' paddies. The artisans strongly believe in preserving the tradition of handmade pottery and their cultural heritage and despite all the modern influences the potters here still find their livelihood on their potter's wheel. Their fine-tuned process yields delicate lines and the soft feel of handmade pottery that offer a subtle delight that mass-produced wares lack.
